It is a hindu temple and is three-storeyed and south-facing. the main sanctum of the temple, also known as Garbha Griha, houses an idol of Goddess kali standing on the chest of lying Lord Shiva. These two idols are placed on a thousand petalled lotus made out of silver. You can also visit the Kalighat kali temple which is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas. This means that according to hindu mythology, when the parts of Sati’s body fell to different places during the Rudra Tandava performed by Lord Shiva, this site was one of those places. In this case, Sati’s toes of the right foot fell here and the legend says that a devotee discovered a ray of light emanating from the river bed. When he approached it, he found a piece of stone carved in the form of a toe.
Another interesting tourist attraction in Kolkata is the Marble Palace which is home to many paintings by European and Indian artists, Western sculptures, and pieces of Victorian furniture.
